Paget's Disease

What do doctors call this condition?

Osteitis deformans

What is this condition?

Paget's disease is a slow-paced metabolic bone disease characterized by replacement of sound bone with excessive amounts of abnormal bone. The altered bone is fragile and weak, causing painful deformities of both outside shape and internal structure. Paget's disease usually settles in one or several areas of the skeleton (most frequently the lower torso), but occasionally affects many parts of the body.

The disease can be fatal, especially when associated with congestive heart failure (widespread disease creates a continuous need for high cardiac output), bone cancer, or giant cell tumors.

What causes it?

Although the exact cause is unknown, one theory is that an early viral infection (possibly mumps) leaves behind a dormant skeletal infection that erupts many years later as Paget's disease. In the United States, Paget's disease affects approximately 2.5 million people over age 40 (mostly men). In 5% of cases, the involved bone experiences malignant changes .

What are its symptoms?

There may be no symptoms in early stages of the disease. But when pain does develop, it's usually severe and persistent and may limit the person's movement because new bone growth is rubbing on the spinal cord or sensory nerve root. The pain intensifies with exertion.

The list of potential effects includes enlarged forehead, headaches, hunchback, barrel- shaped chest, and bowed legs and other changes in gait. The affected areas are warm and tender, susceptible to breaks, and slow to heal. The disease progresses to add bone growth that interferes with sight, hearing, and balance; complications such as hypertension, gout, and congestive heart failure may develop.

How is it diagnosed?

X-rays, taken even before symptoms appear, can show increased bone expansion and density. A bone scan, which is more sensitive than X-rays, clearly shows early so-called pagetic lesions. Bone biopsy reveals a characteristic mosaic pattern. Blood tests and other laboratory tests aid early diagnosis.

How is it treated?

Primary treatment consists of drug therapy and includes one of the following:

• Cibacalcin, a hormone, given by injection, and Didronel to retard bone resorption (which relieves bone lesions). Although Cibacalcin requires long-term maintenance therapy, there is noticeable improvement after the first few weeks of treatment. Didronel produces improvement after 1 to 3 months.

• Mithracin, an antibiotic that produces remission of symptoms within 2 weeks and biochemical improvement within 1 to 2 months. However, the drug may destroy blood cells or harm kidney function. Self-administration of Cibacalcin and Didronel helps people with Paget's disease lead near-normal lives. Still, they may need surgery to reduce or prevent fractures, correct secondary deformities, and relieve pinched nerves. Aspirin, lndocin, or Advil or Motrin usually controls pain.

Hemorrhoids Causing Pain And Bleeding? Treat Hemorrhoids And Piles ...

Almost everyone suffers from hemorrhoids at one point or the other. For most people

this happens between ages 20 and 50. Hemorrhoids are the most common cause of

bleeding and are not generally dangerous - however a diagnosis from your doctor is

essential. Anal bleeding and pain should be evaluated as they could be symptoms of

more serious conditions.

Hemorrhoids are basically varicose veins of the rectum. These veins are located in

the lowest area of the rectum and anus and when they swell, the vein walls become

thin and irritated by bowel movements. When these swollen veins itch, hurt and bleed,

they are known are hemorrhoids or piles.

Hemorrhoids can be internal or external. Internal hemorrhoids are too far inside to

be seen or felt and their presence can usually only be detected by the bleeding.

However internal hemorrhoids can sometimes enlarge and bulge outside the anal

sphincter. Such prolapsed hemorrhoids may be seen as moist pink pads of skin that are

pinker than the surrounding area. These hemorrhoids can hurt but they usually go back

into the rectum on their own or can be gently pushed back into place.

External hemorrhoids form within the anus and are generally painful. If an external

hemorrhoid prolapses to the outside usually during a bowel movement, it can be seen

and felt. Sometimes blood clots can form within a prolapsed external hemorrhoid

causing it to turn blue and bleed. This condition is called thrombosis.

Natural remedies for Hemorrhoids:

1. Incorporate a high fiber diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole

grains.

2. Reduce sodium intake as excessive salt causes fluid retention and consequently

swelling in veins

3. Drink plenty of water.

4. If your work involves sitting for long periods of time, try to get up once every

hour and move around for 5 minutes. A doughnut-shaped cushion will make sitting more

comfortable.

5. Resist the temptation to scratch. Try using a cold pack and herbal anti-itch

cream.

6. Don't sit on the toilet for more than 5 minutes at a time and wipe gently. Dampen

toilet paper or use cotton balls or alcohol free baby wipes.

7. Try yoga exercises. You can also lie on a slant board with your head down for 15

minutes every day. Yoga encourages blood flow away from hemorrhoids.

Medication to Ease Your Hypertension

It seems that pharmaceutical companies are always introducing new products into their range to deal with ailments and conditions.

One such product that has been introduced to deal with hypertension or high blood pressure is Plendil. Whilst high blood pressure does not have a cure it can be maintained or controlled with calcium channel blockers like this.

Short Facts:

Most hypertension medications and calcium channel blockers work to relax arteries and veins in your blood vessels. Plendil is no different and operates on the same principle. When the arteries and veins are relaxed more oxygenated blood can flow to the heart which is of a higher quality. This is effective because the pressure that the heart was under is relieved and the heart is able to pump more effectively with less muscular stress.

The aim of the medication is to reduce serious cardiovascular disease to reduce the risk of death from the effects of high blood pressure.

Side Effects

This medication can produce some side effects which may cause you discomfort. One side effect is that you may experience dental problems, usually in your gums. You will need to increase your dental brushing and flossing routine to avoid these unfortunate side effects.

The other thing is that this medication does not react well with grapefruit. So, if you are a fan of grapefruits or grapefruit drinks you will need to stop your intake while on this course of medication. Unfortunately, when grapefruit and Plendil are mixed there can be dangerous side effects so it is not worth risking that morning drink. Your doctor should be able to advise you on what sort of beverages and meals are suitable for you while taking this drug.

Another thing is, that if you are used to crushing tablets up or chewing them to make it easier to get your daily dose you will not be able to do that while on your course of treatment. This medication must be swallowed whole. If Plendil is taken in any other form the concentrations can increase the absorbtion rate in your body and lead to an overdose.

It is common at the commencement of your treatment to experience dizziness when standing up or sitting down all of a sudden. If you make slow movements it will cause your blood pressure to settle until your body has fully adjusted to this medication.

You will often experience the side effects of this medication first thing in the morning, on standing up or late at night. If the side effects are unusual or cause you discomfort you should immediately consult your doctor.

Administration

Plendil is best taken with a light meal. If taken on an empty stomach it can cause harm to the digestive tract.

You can, of course, take Plendil with or without food. Fact is, though, if you suffer from hyper acidity or GERD, it would be better to line your stomach with a meal.

Long Term Treatment

You will probably find that you will feel much better in the days after you start your treatment. You cannot stop your treatment if this is the case. Stopping your dosage of Plendil suddenly can cause serious affects on your blood pressure. If you do wish to stop your course of treatment you will need to discuss the procedure with your doctor to gradually stop the administration of Plendil.

President Dwight D Eisenhower - The Extraterrestrial Connection

Many Americans do not believe a real war took place in Vietnam, no matter the body count. The Vietnam Conflict was nothing but a grand science experiment - one that failed miserably.

As he entered his last days in office, President Dwight David Eisenhower needed to get something off his chest. That something was, and still is, of utmost importance. Eisenhower knew that for generations upon generations after his own death, the development of Project Aneman - a governmental experiment aimed at creating a superhuman armed force - would affect the whole of America and the world.

It is safe to say the United States government will never disclose the truth about many incidents, such as the infamous 1947 Roswell UFO crash, because the truth would open a hidden door. Behind this door lies a world of unsanctioned, government-funded science. Supposedly for the sake of strengthening our national security, this world of mad science received a green light long ago. Genetic and nuclear scientists, some of whom are certifiably insane, are free to do whatever they must do in order to produce results. These scientists experiment in advanced nuclear arms, chemical warfare, genetic and synthetic robotics, DNA manipulation, and cloning, just to name a few areas.

To aid in their inhumane practices, scientists have routinely ordered the abduction of human beings for the purpose of experimentation. Everyday citizens are randomly abducted by the thousands and cut up like lab rats. Given the nature of their work, many of these scientists are conditioned to fear for their lives, the lives of their families, and the lives of everyone they've ever known.

Incidentally, the experiments are still conducted to this day. Many deal primarily with drastic human evolution. The experiments are so broad that scientists even tamper with our daily food sources, from conception to grocers' shelves. This is the result of the unholy alliance between the FDA and the multi-billion dollar drug companies, which wish only to please their shareholders and to profit at any cost. Illness on a massive scale is no obstacle.

But there's something even scarier. Drug companies are also in league with corrupt, high-ranking government officials throughout the political arena. New medications are tested in this realm. They are taken out of the labs - after all, animal testing only tells scientists so much - and are introduced directly to the American public.

In the process of experimentation, new FDA-approved drugs hit the market and are followed by massive advertising campaigns. Americans, believing in the endorsements of the FDA and lured by the hype circling the new wonder drugs, subsequently become lab rats. In less than a year's time, these same drugs leave a trail of dead bodies, cancer patients, suicides, and more.

I don't hesitate in mentioning one drug in particular, which many of us have come to know and loathe: Lariam. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, this drug is currently in use by the U.S. Army as a supposed anti-malaria drug. Rumor has it this drug has triggered suicides in overseas soldiers. Last year, the FDA ordered that all patients taking the drug receive a written warning stating the side effects of Lariam. These include aggression, paranoia, delusions, depression and psychosis. The drug can also "rarely cause serious mental problems in some patients. Some patients taking Lariam think about killing themselves, and there have been rare reports of suicides."

The warning goes on to state, "It is not known whether Lariam was responsible for these suicides."

America, I don't know about you, but this sounds like a clear contradiction to me. It didn't shock me at all to discover the military is ignoring the known side effects of Lariam. It is the grand science experiment all over again, people. It is the very same experiment that took place during the Vietnam Conflict, however subtle.

Hell, in some of these cases, the government boldly lies to family members, and officials act as though they're stupefied by the high suicide and depression rates. The experiment is alive and well, and our troops are just lambs for the slaughter.

Eisenhower witnessed the extraterrestrial bodies that were recovered after the Roswell incident. Like other Presidents over the years, he was aware of Project Aneman, and he was dead-set against its further development. The development he so vehemently opposed eventually led America into its role in the grand science experiment, which has immorally placed the American soldier in a test tube.

Project Aneman was the primary reason America set out to invade Vietnam. President Eisenhower's authority meant nothing to the powers that truly rule America. His hands were tied when it came to telling the American public about the UFO phenomenon. However, in his final days as Commander in Chief, he chose to covertly warn us about this massive plot. He specifically instructed the American public to "beware of the military's industrial complex."

That, my friends, was a clear warning. Do not ignore the probabilities and possibilities. Choose your pill wisely. America, we are not the only country possessing extraterrestrial DNA and technology. As America has secretly explored the mysteries of what fell from the heavens, other countries have done the same. Unbeknownst to anyone, we've all been embroiled in the midst of a worldwide race. Now our universal brethren have set their plan into overdrive by allowing mankind to do what comes naturally: destroy itself.

Always careful not to appear too obvious, they've cloaked their plan behind scattered crop circles, UFO sightings, and most importantly, their keen knowledge of humanity's drive for absolutism. The crash in Roswell, NM was our delivery. If it had never taken place, the powers manning the populace of this planet would have never experimented with the genetics of those beings that fell from the heavens. They would not now be eating away the fragile essence of the human race with something as simple as a syringe and a lack of a moral compass.

Vintage Shiny Brite Christmas Ornaments - Max Eckardt's Shiny ...

An American businessman named Max Eckardt introduced Christmas tree decorations imported from Germany to the US around 1907. The ornaments consisted mostly of small hand-blown glass balls that were colorfully decorated. Late in the 1930s though, it was plain to Eckardt that the oncoming war was going to disrupt his supplies. So he made a business arrangement with the Corning Glass Company that got them started on Christmas ornament production in their light bulb plants. Corning started making the glass ornaments after adapting their own light bulb manufacturing process and proceeded to ship ornaments to both Woolworth's stores and to Eckardt's factories where the plain ornaments could be further adorned by hand after being machine-lacquered.

As the wartime shortages increased, making both lacquer and silver difficult to come by, Eckardt started having the ornaments decorated in pastels and bright colors. As a result, Shiny Brite ornaments became very popular because of their uniqueness and soon become a staple of every family's Christmas trees. By the end of the war, Shiny Brite was the largest manufacturer of Christmas ornaments in the world and the popularity of the ornaments raged on into the 1950s.

Shiny Brite stopped making and selling the glass balls in 1962 because of production disruption and because of the changing business landscape and moved into the production of plastic ornaments, which never proved to be as popular. But now that we are in the 21st century, demand for the original vintage glass ornaments has shot up and you'll find many "Shiny Brite" ornaments all over Ebay.

One thing to keep in mind though when shopping on Ebay for these ornaments is that many sellers and buyers seem to think that "Shiny Brite" refers to a type of ornament rather than a specific brand name. So if you are looking specifically for ornaments made by Max Eckardt's company, you might want to do a little digging into the auctions.

In addition to the vintage Shiny Brite Christmas ornaments available at antique shops, flea markets and online, Christopher Radko started making reproductions of the ornaments around 2001 and you'll find those on Ebay as well. Generally though you don't have to worry about the Radko reproductions being passed off as the vintage ornaments because Radko's ornaments are collectible in their own right. Also, Radko's ornaments are made in Europe and all of the original Shiny Brite's were of American manufacture.

A Look at the Different Depression and Anxiety Medications

While it may be easy to recite the various brand names and generalize their benefits enough to know they put us (or are supposed to put us) in a better mood, for lack of a better term, the drugs themselves can all be categorized individually, each working in a slightly different way.

The following is a list and very brief description, by category, of depression and anxiety medications currently prescribed by physicians.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)

SSRIs, which are fairly new to the arsenal of depression and anxiety medications, have gained immense popularity among prescribing psychiatrists within the past 10 years. They are usually prescribed during the early stages of depression, if a person has sought help and behavioral and/or psychotherapy has not proven effective enough. With appropriate dosage, SSRIs can "catch" depression before it becomes severe. Although they do not work for 20% to 40% of people who try them, their ability to work for people with minor (and even major) depressive illnesses makes them attractive enough to prescribing psychiatrists to try them first before moving on to more serious depression and anxiety medications and methods, if need be. SSRIs work on serotonin, one of the brain's three neurotransmitters.

SSRIs Brand name (chemical name)

Celexa (citalopram), Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate), Luvox (fluvoxamine), Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline)

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MOAIs)

MAOIs are the type of depression and anxiety medications that work for people who are mildly depressed, develop mild depression over a long period of time, are overly sensitive to their environment, or who are easily able to emerge from periods of depression. People who demonstrate an excess of a particular activity (ie, overeating, oversleeping, emotional overreaction) as compensation with stress can benefit from MAOIs, which work on the three neurotransmitters (called monoamines) found in the brain: norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. These are usually only prescribed when a person hasn't responded to any of the other types of depression and anxiety medications.

A strict diet must be followed if taking an MAOI, because in conjunction with certain foods, the body can react with elevated blood pressure, headaches, fluctuating blood sugar (for people with diabetes), and in more severe cases, brain hemorrhage. Because of these risks, MAOIs were taken off the American market for a while, but were reintroduced for patients who haven't had luck with any other depression and anxiety medications.

MAOIs Brand name (chemical name)

Nardil (phenelzine), Parnate (tranylcypromine)

Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)

Tricyclics have been available longer than any other depression and anxiety medications. In 1958, the first tricyclic, imipramine (Tofranil), was released to help combat major depression, and physicians saw a 70% positive response within their patients. Previously the only treatments for severely depressed patients were amphetamines and electroshock therapy. TCAs increase the brain's supply of serotonin and norepinephrine, two of the brain's three neurotransmitters, but it also affects some of the brain's other nerve impulses as well, and this allows for more side effects.

Severely depressed and/or hospitalized patients see the most benefit from taking TCAs because of its sedative effect. In the past, patients were usually prescribed tricyclics before anything else, but with the movement of psychiatrists (and patients!) toward heading off depression before it becomes severe and/or chronic, TCAs are now usually only prescribed if the other types of depression and anxiety medications don't work.

TCAs Brand name (chemical name)

Adapin (doxepin), Anafranil (clomipramine) , Elavil (amitriptyline), Endep (amitriptyline), Ludiomil (maprotiline), Norpramin (desipramine) , Pamelor (nortryptyline), Pertofrane (desipramine), Sinequan (doxepin), Surmontil (trimipramine), Tofranil (imipramine), Vivactil (protriptyline)

Non-specified or "Other" depression and anxiety medications

Because their chemical make-ups do not fit into any of the other categories, the following list of depression and anxiety medications can only be termed as "other." Wellbutrin, Desyrel, Remeron, and Effexor are prescribed most. Each of the four drugs affects at least one of the brain's three neurotransmitters (norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine), and as a result, each has its own particular set of side effects. As a result, psychiatrists are much more likely to prescribe one of the other types of depression and anxiety medications (SSRIs, MAOIs, TCAs) before switching to one of these. In some instances, a patient's regimen is augmented by combining an SSRI or TCA with an"other" depression and anxiety medications, but because of an MAOI's particular chemical make-up and dietary requirements, it is prescribed alone.

Brand names (chemical names) of Non-specified depression and anxiety medications

Buspar (buspirone), Cymbalta (duloxetine), Desyrel (trazodone) , Effexor (venlafaxine), Edronax, Vestra (reboxetine), Remeron (mirtazapine), Serzone (nefazodone), Wellbutrin (bupropion).

In August of 2004, the FDA approved the investigational drug Cymbaltaв„ў (duloxetine HCl), which demonstrated rapid relief of anxiety symptoms associated with depression that was sustained for the length of the study period, according to new data published in the journal Depression and Anxiety. In clinical studies, researchers attribute the medication's effect on a broad spectrum of depression symptoms, which include emotional and painful physical symptoms as well as anxiety, to its dual reuptake inhibition of both serotonin and norepinephrine.
