Anxiety Medication

Anxiety medication helps reduce the symptoms of anxiety. They do not completely cure anxiety and every person responds individually to the medication.

Various medications that are used in anxiety treatment are antidepressants, anti anxiety medications and beta-blockers.

Anti depressants increase the level of serotonin, which is a brain chemical messenger, and this helps fight anxiety. The newest antidepressants that are used for anxiety treatment are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). They are FDA approved and often used as the first line of treatment for anxiety. The three SSRIs antidepressants that have received the FDA approval for the treatment of social anxiety disorder are paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft) and venlafaxine (Effexor XR). Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are the oldest antidepressants, which have showed positive results in curing anxiety disorder. However, because of the side effects of this medicine (such as weight gain and insomnia), MAOIs are used only when other medications fail. Another antidepressant called tricyclics is also effective in treating anxiety disorder. When the treatment is begun, a low dosage of this medicine is prescribed; it is increased over a period of time, depending upon the effect it has on the individual. SSRIs are generally preferred because tricyclics can sometimes cause sexual dysfunction, dizziness and drowsiness.

Anti anxiety medication are benzodiazepines, which relieve the symptoms of anxiety quickly and which calms the individual. Benzodiazepine includes drugs such as Xanax, Kalma, Restoril, Tranxene and Valium. They are fast acting medicines, but they do not have a long lasting effect. These medicines have side effects like drowsiness and fatigue. Benzodiazepines cannot be given over a long period of time, as a person can develop a tolerance to them and become dependent on them. Some people also experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop the use of these medicines. Buspirone (BuSpar), is another anti anxiety medicine which must be taken for at least two weeks for the effects to show.

Beta-blockers such as Inderal and Tenormin are also used to treat anxiety. This medication is useful in performance anxiety that is predictable. They help alleviate heart palpitations, tremors, sweating, blushing and other physical symptoms of anxiety. It is generally recommended that these medications are taken an hour before the anxiety situation. However beta-blockers may not be a long-term treatment for curing negative thoughts that create anxiety.

Using Triptans to Treat Migraine Headaches

For the many millions of people who suffer from migraines finding an effective treatment has been difficult and has taken a considerable time. Even after years of research there is no miracle cure, but a new class of drugs known as triptans are as close to a miracle cure as we have come for these often intensely painful headaches that can strike at any time.

The triptans are a form of drug which is chemically similar to serotonin, which is itself a neurotransmitter that is believed to play a part in causing migraines. As with many drug treatments, success often comes from creating a compound which is chemically similar to a naturally occurring chemical in the body and using this to boost levels in the body at times when symptoms appear. In this case triptans attach themselves to receptors where the body's natural biochemical would normally be found, but behavior slightly differently to alleviate symptoms. Technically triptans are in a class of drugs known as 5-HT1B/1D agonists.

Although these new drugs have been shown to be effective in many cases of migraine there are some studies which suggest that they are more effective for migraine sufferers who lack skin sensitivity. For those people who do experience skin sensitivity during an attack triptans can still be effective, but they should be taken as soon as possible after the onset of a migraine and preferably within no more than about 20 minutes after the appearance of symptoms.

In many cases migraine sufferers experience what is known as an 'aura' prior to the onset of their headache and this is not only the warning sign of an approaching headache but also the cue to start treatment. Although not all sufferers will experience an aura for those that do it varies widely but is essentially a visual disturbance consisting of such things as seeing spots or flashing lights.

Triptan drugs were first introduced during the 1990s and there are now various different types of these drugs available under a variety of different commercial names. One very common treatment is sumatriptan, which is sold under the brand name of Imitrex. This first generation of drugs proved very effective but still did not quite do the trick as well as doctors would have wished and so today we see a second generation of more effective triptans. These include zolmitriptan (sold as Zomig) and rizatriptan (sold as Maxalt).

These second generation drugs are often referred to as 'aborters' or 'interrupters' because they are designed to stop a migraine in its early stages and before it builds into the intense and pulsating pain which is so familiar to migraine sufferers. Second generation triptans are preferred by many sufferers because they do not have to be taken before the arrival of the headache, which can be difficult to predict as symptoms are not always very pronounced. In addition, they are effective for a longer period of time, which is also important for those people whose migraines can last for days rather than hours. Triptans can also help to relieve or eliminate other migraine symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

One other problem which is often present with traditional medicines taken in pill form is that they require you to have water on hand to take the pill and then take time to work as the pill is broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream. Many of the new triptans however, such as rizatriptan (marketed as Maxalt), are available in a wafer form which simply dissolves on the tongue and drugs are now also available in the form of nasal sprays which are very fast acting.

As with any medication triptans do carry a range of side effects and you should consult your physician before using any of these drugs to treat your migraine.

Chronic Cluster Headache - How To Prevent Them And How To Stop Them

If you suffer from chronic cluster headace, the good news is that they can be prevented. Generally speaking, there are induction and maintenance therapies aimed at stopping cluster headaches (prophylactic treatment) that can be started at the same time.

Corticosteroids such as prednisone (Deltasone, Sterapred, and others) and dexamethasone (Decadron) are often used to break the headache cycle. These drugs are used to jump-start treatment for maintenance therapy and are not meant for long-term use.

Stopping cluster headaches

If your cluster headaches have already started, they can be stopped. Believe it or not, the most effective of abortive treatment for cluster headaches does not even require a prescription. It is to inhale pure oxygen - at the rate of seven liters per minute through a mask.

Other first-line treatments for cluster headaches

Triptan drugs

The include subcutaneous administration of triptan drugs such as sumatriptan and zolmitriptan. Ergot compounds have also been used to treat cluster headaches but those suffering from these headaches have reported they have obtained similar relief just by drinking strong cups of coffee immediately at the onset of an attack.

Because cluster headaches can begin so suddenly, the triptan drugs are usually administered by subcutaneous injection rather than by mouth. Most are also available as a nasal spray. However, these sprays do not seen to be as effective as subcutaneous injection due to the swelling of nasal passages during a cluster headache attack.

Dihydroergotamine

Dihydroergotamine is an ergo derivative available in injectable and inhaler forms. Dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal) is an effective pain reliever for some people suffering from cluster headaches. You must go to a hospital or doctor's office to have the drug administered intravenously as the inhaler form of the drug works more slowly.

Sumitriptan

The injectable form of sumatriptin (Imitrex) is commonly used to treat migraine can also be effective in treating cluster headaches. Another triptan drug, zolmitriptan (Zomig) taken orally can help relieve a cluster headache. There is an oral form of this drug available but it is not considered as effective as injectable sumitriptan.

A topical anesthetic such as Lidocaine sprayed into your nasal cavity may also reliever stop the pain, normally in a few minutes. However, it is not suggested that you use Lidocaine long-term due to its side affects and the possibility of damage to your nasal cavities.

Lidocaine

If Lidocaine sprayed into the nasal cavity provides good relief, this may indicate that two of your mucous membranes are in contact. This could be caused by genetics, a congenital defect, trauma or even weight gain. A minor, undetected deviated septum is the most common reason for two mucous membranes to be in contact. A simple out-patient procedure is such as nasoplasty, rhinoplasty, or septoplasty can separate the contact points and will stop the pain immediately and permanently.

Female Libido Enhancer - No Need For Fake Orgasms Anymore

You surely remember the block-buster movie "When Harry Met Sally" where Meg Ryan successfully faked an orgasm in front of a stunned audience including a jaw-dropping Billy Crystal in a restaurant? If one was to believe the official statistics which confirm that 46% of American women do not enjoy sex it is highly likely that many of us have been taking the Meg Ryan route in bed, just to keep the partner happy. Lack of sex drive and the inability to enjoy sex any more is not a problem where you are a lone sufferer.

To make this problem understood and appreciated by men is rather difficult and the way things have been for centuries the prerogative of sexual fulfillment was always focused on men. The several roles which women have to play to manage her daily life is one of the primary reasons for her lack of interest in sex. From being an ideal wife to the perfect mother to the perfect worker in office, women find sex no where in their list of priorities. But to find the right solution for lack of libido, you ought to find the exact cause. If it is related to fatigue or any other psychological factors, then the treatment is different from any cause related to any physiological disorder.

Today men have several libido enhancement products and there is no reason why women should be deprived of this magnificent catalyst which can boost up sexual energy and the right to have equal enjoyment in bed. There are plenty of female libido enhancers in the market in the form of supplements, creams and pills which have given excellent results to women who lack the drive and suffer from low libido.

If you have decided to do something positive about your low libido levels, how do you go about your research? Instead of simply going by word-of-mouth publicity generated by your friends and female colleagues, it is a wise decision to search the internet, visit relevant forums and know for yourself, what is good and what seems like a hype. You would chance upon several advertisements on TV, radio and the internet, which promises you the earth and the moon in a combo pack. It does not make sense to jump into a therapy regimen without knowing much about it. For instance, when you are searching for an effective female libido enhancer, the first thought that should come to your mind is whether the therapy is safe as well as effective? Does it retain your privacy? Does it have too many untoward side effects? What are the ingredients like and whether they are synthetic or natural or herbal in origin, etc.

Provestra is a successful and reputed product which has proved its efficacy in millions of women round the world. Made of 100% natural herbs which have been tested individually for safety and efficacy, Provestra is, as incredible as it may sound, completely devoid of any side effect. It is one of the most effective female libido enhancers which excites you enough to have sex, but relaxes you enough to enjoy it. So if you are tired of faking orgasms all the time, Provestra could be your friend in the times to come. Simply check whether any of its ingredients, though tried and tested for centuries, would likely have any allergic reactions. To know this, a discussion with your doctor would be recommended.

What Kind of Eczema Treatment Can You Expect?

Eczema, a term used by most people to refer to Atopic Dermatitis, is an incurable disease which affects the skin. Although sure is not a possibility, there are things you can do to control the symptoms.

These things are a combination of medical attention and at home care. It is important for you to see a dermatologist when symptoms first appear as treating as early as possible helps you to keep your symptoms to a minimum and often makes the flare up period much shorter than it would be otherwise.

No matter how much you read about skin conditions, it is important that you understand a doctor diagnosis is important for you to plan the proper care for your condition. Many skin conditions resemble each other, while some are extremely painful and aggravating, others are caused by something else wrong in your body and can be fatal when not treated.

There are also a number of skin conditions that are curable, unlike eczema. A dermatologist can diagnose your skin condition through various tests, allowing him to give you the proper treatment and allowing you to learn the correct way to care for your condition at home.

Your dermatologist will need to know: when the symptoms first appeared in your lifetime; all of the symptoms (itching, pain, blistering, fever, etc); he will also need to know things that seem to make the symptoms worse (such as, whether washing makes the itching worse); whether you family has any history of skin conditions, hay fever, or asthma; and your own medical history.

When visiting the dermatologist, be prepared for him to order a biopsy. This is a normal procedure when dealing with skin conditions and does not necessarily mean that he thinks you have cancer. Do not let yourself stress over this test, especially since stress tends to worsen symptoms. He may also suggest that you have allergy testing done.

Possible Treatments:

Treatments are based on several factors: what kind of eczema you have, how bad it is, your age and medical history, and results of past treatments. Remember that treatment is a way to manage symptoms, not cure the disease. Moisturizing with creams (not most lotions because they can cause even more drying) are usually used with any treatment plan.

Treatment plans are also modified on an individual basis as you and your doctor know and understand more about triggering factors in your case.

First, if the dermatologist finds another condition, such as bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, he will prescribe a medicine to get rid of the infection. Antibiotics will be prescribed for bacterial infections, antiviral are prescribed for viral infections and antifungals will conquer fungal infection.

These may be applied to the skin, taken by mouth, or given in a shot, depending on the type as severity of the infection.

Treatment usually begins with topical medications which may or may not be coupled with antihistamines. Topical treatments are applied to the skin and are usually a cream which comes in a tube.

Most are members of the corticosteroid family of medicine. It is very important, as with any medication, to follow your doctor instructions. Too few applications will not give you much benefit and too many applications can cause thin skin. Some of the corticosteroids include:

The newest form of topical medication is the topical Immunomodulators (TIMs). These do not have steroids in them, so they do not have the problems with thin skin that corticosteroids do. Elidel and Protopic are both TIMs.

If topical medications do not produce acceptable results, you may have to move to another phase of treatment. Other phases include phototherapy, in which you will be treated with UV rays, directed by either laser or sunlamps.

The UV light is focused on the symptomatic area which has had a medication applied to help the process. Beyond phototherapy, you may have to begin systemic treatments. These are medications which are taken into the body, whether by mouth or shot.

You will also find that you have several things you will need to do in your life to help minimize flare ups. Moisturizing, stress relief, avoiding allergens and avoiding irritants are a few of these things.

Paget's Disease

What do doctors call this condition?

Osteitis deformans

What is this condition?

Paget's disease is a slow-paced metabolic bone disease characterized by replacement of sound bone with excessive amounts of abnormal bone. The altered bone is fragile and weak, causing painful deformities of both outside shape and internal structure. Paget's disease usually settles in one or several areas of the skeleton (most frequently the lower torso), but occasionally affects many parts of the body.

The disease can be fatal, especially when associated with congestive heart failure (widespread disease creates a continuous need for high cardiac output), bone cancer, or giant cell tumors.

What causes it?

Although the exact cause is unknown, one theory is that an early viral infection (possibly mumps) leaves behind a dormant skeletal infection that erupts many years later as Paget's disease. In the United States, Paget's disease affects approximately 2.5 million people over age 40 (mostly men). In 5% of cases, the involved bone experiences malignant changes .

What are its symptoms?

There may be no symptoms in early stages of the disease. But when pain does develop, it's usually severe and persistent and may limit the person's movement because new bone growth is rubbing on the spinal cord or sensory nerve root. The pain intensifies with exertion.

The list of potential effects includes enlarged forehead, headaches, hunchback, barrel- shaped chest, and bowed legs and other changes in gait. The affected areas are warm and tender, susceptible to breaks, and slow to heal. The disease progresses to add bone growth that interferes with sight, hearing, and balance; complications such as hypertension, gout, and congestive heart failure may develop.

How is it diagnosed?

X-rays, taken even before symptoms appear, can show increased bone expansion and density. A bone scan, which is more sensitive than X-rays, clearly shows early so-called pagetic lesions. Bone biopsy reveals a characteristic mosaic pattern. Blood tests and other laboratory tests aid early diagnosis.

How is it treated?

Primary treatment consists of drug therapy and includes one of the following:

• Cibacalcin, a hormone, given by injection, and Didronel to retard bone resorption (which relieves bone lesions). Although Cibacalcin requires long-term maintenance therapy, there is noticeable improvement after the first few weeks of treatment. Didronel produces improvement after 1 to 3 months.

• Mithracin, an antibiotic that produces remission of symptoms within 2 weeks and biochemical improvement within 1 to 2 months. However, the drug may destroy blood cells or harm kidney function. Self-administration of Cibacalcin and Didronel helps people with Paget's disease lead near-normal lives. Still, they may need surgery to reduce or prevent fractures, correct secondary deformities, and relieve pinched nerves. Aspirin, lndocin, or Advil or Motrin usually controls pain.
